    This is somethiing I've been thinking of writing in my blog. It's funny that you feel the same. For some reason Japanese tend to be more formal, or "ceremonial" I should say, when dating or asking someone out for a date. Even young people says "kokuru", which means kokuhaku-suru.

    When dating a westerner, you usually ask someone out for dinner or drinks in a casual way, like " Do you wanna go for drinks?" then you start seeing each other often. There's no custom of "kokuru" in western culture.

    I guess this is not only Japanese, but sort of Asian culture in general. I was once asked by an Indian guy to be his girlfriend. He said to me, "will you be my girlfriend"? and I was very surprised because nobody ever asked me that way. Very intersting.

    Thanks for sharing!

    It would be great to come up with the world map for kokuru vs. kokuranai and examine whether the pattern matches with Asia vs. the rest of the world. Perhaps the kokuru system is too dramatic and embarrassing.
